Instead of traditional abdominal incisions, laparoscopic surgery involves use of a laparoscope through a small incision made on the abdominal wall to reach to the uterus and perform diagnosis and surgery. In the initial stages, it can be performed to look for definite signs of endometriosis or other hidden growths and from surgical point of view, it can be used to any visible endometriosis and scar tissues that cause infertility. It is a low risk procedure and performed typically under general anesthesia and requires minimum hospital stay.
It is generally recommended by the doctor if there is severe abdominal pain due to endometriosis and it is interfering with the organs and is causing infertility problems or there is abnormal mass on the ovary which causes endometriosis. It enables direct viewing of the organs and helps reach to a definite diagnosis. When the internal scar tissue or endometriosis is found, the surgeon either does excision to remove the tissue or performs an endometriosis ablation which uses heating, electricity and laser beams to destroy the tissue completely.
