More About High Risk Obstetrics

High risk pregnancies can be a result of medical conditions that develop later during subsequent trimesters or are pre-existing and can cause trouble to the mother or the fetus or both. Some causes of high risk pregnancies include advanced maternal age, deleterious lifestyle choices, history of chronic illnesses like hypertension, diabetes, heart disorders, infections, PCOS, uterine disorders and blood clotting diseases among others. History of surgery of the uterus, or abdominal surgeries and tumors or fibroids can also induce high risk pregnancies.

A holistic approach is necessary to handle high risk pregnancies. Various tests and procedures have to be performed by the obstetrician including ultrasonography, assessment of amniotic fluids, assessment of vital stats, uterine and cervical tests, biophysical profile check-up, monitoring of growth status of the baby in every trimester, adequate medication support and counseling. An obstetrician, fetal medicine expert and counsellor have to work in conjunction to ensure healthy growth of the child and the safe delivery of the mother.
