More About Laparoscopic Myomectomy

Uterine fibroids are one of the most common benign tumors occurring in women belonging to the reproductive age group and they are commonly seen due to changing lifestyle, late pregnancy, infertility, delayed menstruation and several other gynecological abnormalities. Where open surgery has been an old technique to treat fibroids, laparoscopic myomectomy was first introduced in 1979 to minimize risk of complications and perform the surgery in the most non invasive method. Where it was first confined to subserous fibroids, it is at present, one of the most common methods used in infertile patients to treat every anomaly related to fibroids.

Myomectomy when performed is usually aimed at taking out symptom causing fibroids and reconstruct the uterus instead of completely removing it unlike hysterectomy. Myomectomy poses no threat to surrounding structures and leaves the uterus intact. Patients undergoing myomectomy report significant improvement in fibroid symptoms, arrest heavy bleeding and also reduce pelvic pressure. For women suffering from fibroids and who foresee a planned pregnancy must opt for myomectomy instead of hysterectomy.
